Tell us a little about who you are and what you do...

Hi I'm Lynn Conley, Business Support Specialist and Web Designer at Ready2Assist.

Ready2Assist provides bespoke support to sole traders and small businesses, covering a wide range of services, including Social Media, Website Design, SEO, Email Marketing, Administration, and Business Management, which saves time, reduces costs and allows business owners to concentrate on their core business activities.

What does success mean to you, right now?

Still having the motivation and determination to work both in and on my business after 8 years. My original aim was to create a lifestyle business - to be self-employed for around 5 years over the period when my children were very young. I wanted to have the autonomy to manage my own schedule and workload, to provide me with the flexibility to work and look after my children, and to take time off when needed. This initial plan developed into something more substantial within the first 3 years, and I now feel that the success of the business is something to build on, and continue deriving pleasure, rather than moving back to employment.

What do you love about what you do?

Helping my clients to succeed and to enjoy running their business. Success can mean different things to different clients, including building their businesses, helping them to keep on top of their busy schedule, taking the pressure off their To-Do list, providing technical support when they’re struggling, or even reducing their stress levels and providing space in their day to do more for themselves, or enjoy more quality time with their friends or family.

What do you find most challenging?

Task switching. It’s a big no-no in productivity circles and for good reason! However I have a varied client base and workload, so it’s sometimes unavoidable. An hour of admin may be followed by 30 minutes website maintenance, then a 15 minute slot of social media. It can be difficult to re-focus but has become a bit of a necessary evil that I’ve grown accustomed to.

What's your biggest achievement(s) to date?

Taking the leap to self-employment in the first place! It had been something I’d wanted to do for many years so knew it was the right thing for me. The security of paid employment is a hard thing to move away from, but I knew the time was right when I had my second child, and set up the business at the end of my maternity leave.

What are your hopes and dreams for future success and happiness?

As a minimum, to maintain my business in its current form and enjoy the flexibility of work and pleasure that it brings. However now that my children are a little older and more independent, I hope to build the business and take on more projects, including outsourcing more of what I do in order to expand further.

What's your best piece of advice for others wanting to feel more successful?

Do what you love! I’ve always taken great pleasure in helping other people, so being in a role where I do that on a daily basis means that I no longer get Sunday night blues and look forward to settling down with a cuppa in front of my computer every Monday morning ?.

Anything else you’d like to add?

If you’re currently in a job that’s not bringing you pleasure, I’d encourage you to seriously consider self-employment. It’s not an easy road, but it’s a rewarding one. Ready2Assist can provide support to new businesses, including the all-important website and social media presence. Likewise, for business owners who are in need of a website refresh, or are in need of assistance with their workload, I’m always happy to chat about professional business support options, and have a range of packages to suit.
